| The fetal Medicine Unit - Cairo University |
| Fetal medicine is a relatively new subspecialty in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It has become an elemental part of Reproductive Health education and training. The practice of fetal medicine has major implications, not only for the individual family, but also for society as a whole. Although a high proportion of pregnancies would benefit from expertise in this area, for many conditions there is little agreement concerning standards of care. This is partly because fetal medicine is a rapidly expanding discipline with those providing care, obtaining information from often-outdated textbooks and from the conflicting findings of research papers. |
|
Kasr El Eini School of Medicine was established in 1827. It is the oldest and largest faculty in Egypt and in the whole area. It is more than 175 years old and has been and still is the leading medical education centre for the Egyptian and other Arab countries. |
| The mission of the school is to promote outstanding programs of medical care to serve society and to promote environmental development, to maintain the atmosphere of co-operation, peer relation and mutual respect in the university society and to encourage and to foster the individual creativity in the university society. |
| Our department has provided postgraduate training courses in the field of Fetal Medicine over the past few years. We give two basic and two advanced courses per year in the area of prenatal diagnosis and ultrasound. Due to limited facilities and budgets we were unable to train all the doctors who wished to join us and we were not able to support International Experts who could have joined us in those training courses. |
| We have started the “Fetal Medicine Unit” in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Kasr El Eini Medical School in Cairo University. |

| Goals: |
- To reduce perinatal mortality and morbidity related to fetal conditions diagnosed and/or treated during pregnancy in Egypt through the increase in knowledge of and training in “Fetal Medicine” among OB/GYN specialists.
- To diminish the rates of preterm birth, fetal growth abnormalities, neurologic sequelae of the newborn, and maternal complications of pregnancy, as well as to evaluate maternal and fetal interventions for efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Included in these aims are translational research, the use of genetics, and the evaluation of new technologies in the promotion of maternal-child health/prevention of disease.
